That shift in mindset changed everything. I leaned into the moment, embraced the unfamiliar, and allowed stress to drift away. Those four days became a reset I didn’t know I needed—and it all started with saying “yes.”

Out with the old, in with the new

I didn’t realize how much I needed this resort escape until I was already there. My daily life had become a blur of routine—comfortable but uninspired—fueling burnout without me even noticing. But Hilton Vallarta Riviera shattered that cycle. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and into moments that felt entirely new—and exactly right.

What surprised me most? The sheer variety of experiences. With so many unique activities offered, trying something unfamiliar is practically guaranteed. Here are a few things I did for the first time—and how those new experiences helped me reset and recharge.

Leaving the country for the first time in 24 years

At 29, I hadn’t traveled internationally since I was in kindergarten. I’d always dreamed of exploring new places, but growing up without the means—and later, the time—kept those dreams on hold. I’ve never been good at sitting still, let alone silencing my racing thoughts, so meditation had never clicked with me. But this was different.

We lay on yoga mats in the sand, closed our eyes, and let the soothing tones of crystal singing bowls wash over us. The deep, harmonic vibrations are paired with the natural rhythm of crashing waves, birdsong, and rustling palms. For the first time in a long while, I honestly tuned into the present moment—and out of my own head.

That hour flew by. What started as a one-time experience quickly became part of my self-care routine. I now attend local sound baths regularly, and each one brings me back to that peaceful morning in Mexico—grounded, calm, and fully present.

Getting my first massage

As a full-time writer, I spend most of my days hunched over a laptop—so, unsurprisingly, my posture is a mess. You’d think I’d balance that out with yoga, stretching, or even the occasional massage. But truthfully, I do none of those things.

Taking a cooking class, even though I was allergic to the food

Cooking has never been my thing—it’s the one chore I genuinely dread. So when I saw a ceviche-making class on the itinerary, I planned to skip it. Not just because I don’t enjoy cooking, but also because I’m allergic to all seafood. And ceviche without fish or shrimp? I didn’t think that was possible.

But learning about traditional Mexican cooking and making a dish from scratch felt unexpectedly empowering.
